Formats and sizes the Gemini image watermark remover accepts

Input accepts PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Output is always PNG, regardless of what went in.

  • PNG in — the ideal case. Lossless all the way through, and what Gemini gives you.
  • WebP in — also lossless if Gemini exported it that way; handled the same.
  • JPEG in — works, but the compression has already nudged the watermark pixels, so the reversal is slightly approximate.
  • Smallest accepted: 80×80 pixels. Below that there is not enough image around the mark to locate it reliably.
  • Largest accepted: 8000×8000 pixels, or 30 MB per file. An 8000×8000 image needs about 244 MB of memory just to hold its pixels, which is already more than some phones will give a browser tab.

Why the output is PNG and not JPEG

A Gemini image watermark remover has to pick an output format, and the choice matters. JPEG throws away detail in 8×8 blocks. Saving a repaired image as JPEG would run those freshly reconstructed pixels through that process a second time, and the artefacts land precisely on the area you were trying to clean.

A side effect worth stating plainly: writing a new PNG means metadata from your original file is not carried over. That includes EXIF and C2PA Content Credentials if the file had them. This is what re-encoding does in any editor, not something specific to this Gemini image watermark remover.

How the Gemini image watermark remover handles different backgrounds

The watermark is white, blended at roughly 30% opacity. How visible it is — and how obvious any imperfection would be — depends entirely on what sits behind it. We measured this across a set of fourteen real Gemini images covering flat dark fields, gradients, fabric, foliage, gravel, charts, and near-white scenes.

On a native file from Gemini the arithmetic is exact in every one of those cases. The differences below matter for files that have been screenshotted, resized, or re-saved, where the reversal becomes approximate.

  • Dark, flat backgrounds show the watermark most clearly, so they are the easiest place to confirm a clean result — and the least forgiving of a bad one.
  • Busy texture such as gravel or foliage hides both the watermark and any leftover trace. A faint residue is genuinely hard to spot, which is why the comparison view magnifies the area rather than showing the whole image.
  • Near-white backgrounds barely show the mark at all: white blended onto white changes very little, so there is very little to undo.
  • Where the watermark overlaps a high-contrast edge in the artwork, the repair has the least surrounding context to work with, and is the most likely place to see a slight softening.

What the Gemini image watermark remover does not handle

This is the single-image tool for the Gemini corner mark. Some things are out of scope by design, and some the engine simply cannot do.

  • Many images at once — use the bulk page, which processes a whole folder and zips the results.
  • Video files. The engine handles still images only.
  • Text watermarks, logos, or objects overlaid on the image. Removing the corner mark and erasing arbitrary content are different problems.
  • SynthID. It is invisible, embedded in the image data, and untouched here.

Does the Gemini image watermark remover work on JPEG files?

Usually, but with a caveat worth understanding. JPEG compression slightly alters every pixel, including the watermark ones the reversal depends on. In our testing across a range of quality settings, detection was unaffected and most results were indistinguishable from processing the original — but a small number kept a visible trace. If you still have the file Gemini gave you, use that instead.

Why is there a minimum size of 80×80?

The watermark is located by matching a known pattern at a fixed position relative to the corner. Below roughly 80 pixels there is not enough surrounding image for that match to be trustworthy, and a confident guess in the wrong place is worse than no result at all.

What happens to transparency in a PNG?

The Gemini image watermark remover passes the alpha channel through untouched. Only the red, green, and blue values inside the watermark area are recalculated.

The watermark in my image is not in the bottom-right corner. Will it work?

Probably not. The engine looks for the mark at the position Gemini places it, which is a fixed distance from the bottom-right corner. If your image has been cropped or rotated, the geometry no longer matches and the Gemini image watermark remover will most likely report that it found nothing rather than modify the wrong area.

Can I process a Gemini video with this?

No. The Gemini image watermark remover handles still images only. Video is a different technical problem — decoding, processing, and re-encoding hundreds of frames in a browser — and we would rather ship nothing than ship something that half works.

Does processing an image cost me quality anywhere else in the file?

No. Pixels outside the watermark area are copied through without being touched, and the output is lossless. If you compare the original and the result, the only differences are inside the small square where the mark used to be.
